When it comes to non-destructive testing, the quality of the service depends largely on an element that is often underestimated: the certification of personnel. Among all, UNI EN ISO 9712 is the most internationally recognized reference standard to qualify NDT operators. But how does this certification really make a difference?
The answer is simple: it ensures that those who perform the control are competent, prepared and up-to-date. In a sector where a mistake can have serious consequences, both in terms of safety and money, knowing that you can rely on a certified professional is a safety for everyone: customers, manufacturers and inspectors.
What is UNI EN ISO 9712
UNI EN ISO 9712 defines the requirements for the qualification and certification of personnel in charge of non-destructive testing. The standard applies to the certification of NDT personnel operating in various industrial sectors (including oil & gas, mechanical, railway, naval, construction) and covers numerous techniques: from ultrasound to penetrating liquids, from radiography to magnetoscopy up to advanced techniques such as phased array and ToFD.
The certification is divided into three levels:
- Level 1: The operator performs checks under supervision, according to written instructions.
- Level 2: is able to independently set up and interpret the control, compile and sign test reports, and guide level 1 technicians.
- Level 3: has advanced skills, can design inspection plans, train other operators and take responsibility for the validation of operating procedures, interpret technical regulations and supervise lower levels
Each level includes a structured training course, minimum hours of practical experience, minimum physical requirements and the passing of theoretical and practical exams, and periodic updates (every 5 years).
Why is this so important?
An ISO 9712 certified operator is not simply “trained”. It is assessed by a third party, independently and impartially. This means that his skills do not depend on self-declarations or generic certificates, but on verifiable and objective standards.
For the client, working with UNI EN ISO 9712 certified personnel offers several concrete advantages:
- Compliance with regulations and technical specifications (often mandatory).
- Reliability of results, thanks to correct procedures and competent interpretations.
- Reduction of the risk of disputes, reconstructions or errors of evaluation.

Certification and quality go hand in hand
Too often, especially on construction sites or in urgent situations, there is a tendency to underestimate staff training. But it is precisely in those contexts that technical preparation and experience make the difference. A complex weld, a difficult geometry, an ambiguous anomaly require expert eyes and a clear mind, not improvisation.
A level 2 or 3 technician certified according to ISO 9712 is able not only to detect a defect, but to understand if that defect is acceptable according to the standard, if it should be reported to the customer, if it is necessary to repeat the check with a more appropriate technique. This approach not only improves the quality of service, but also increases the safety of the entire plant.
Continuous training is part of the service
Another key aspect of ISO 9712 is the requirement for continuous updating. The industry evolves, regulations change, techniques are refined. For this reason, the certification provides for periodic renewals and the demonstration that the technician has kept his competence active.
A company that invests in the certification of its staff is, in reality, investing in the quality of controls, customer satisfaction and corporate reputation.
