When it comes to safety in the oil and gas sector and in the offshore sector, the margins of error are reduced to zero. Pipes, flanges, welds and metal structures must guarantee absolute integrity, even in extreme environments and subjected to high stresses. It is in this context that non-destructive testing (NDT) becomes a strategic resource, not only to comply with regulations, but to prevent accidents, breakdowns and plant downtime.
In an oil pipeline, for example, an undetected crack in a weld could turn into a leak with very serious economic and environmental impacts. On an offshore platform, the degradation of a structural joint could compromise the stability of the entire plant. For this reason, non-destructive testing is an integral part of the life cycle of plants: from construction to maintenance, up to decommissioning.
Fundamental techniques for oil and gas
The most widely used methods in these sectors are:
- Ultrasonic (UT): They allow you to identify internal defects in welds and metal materials, even at great thicknesses. It is a technique suitable for both workshop and field checks.
- Radiography (RT): Used for critical welds or when visual documentation of results is required. It provides a detailed picture of the defect, but requires longer time and radiological safety management, s especially in sensitive environments such as platforms or active plants, where the use of isotopes or X-ray equipment imposes operational restrictions and specific authorizations.
- Magnetic particles (MT): effective for detecting surface or sub-surface cracks on ferromagnetic materials, such as carbon steels.
- Liquid Penetrant (PT): Ideal for smooth surfaces and non-porous materials. They are often used to assess the integrity of a coating or the establishment of a fatigue crack on the surface.
- Visual inspection (VT): this is the basis of any verification, often supplemented by optical instruments, borescopes or endoscopic cameras. Visual inspection is often the first step, but it still requires specific preparation to correctly identify visible defects and assess their criticality according to the standard.
Depending on environmental conditions and applicable regulations (such as API, ASME, EN), controls are carried out with specific procedures, with qualified personnel and instruments calibrated according to international standards.
The criticality of operating conditions
In the offshore world and in oil and gas plants, work is not done in ideal conditions. High pressures, potentially explosive atmospheres, corrosive environments, difficult access: all these factors make controls more complex and delicate. It is necessary to know how to adapt to any operating context, even on suspended, high-altitude or submerged structures.
Here experience in the field becomes fundamental. An inexperienced coach may find himself in difficulty, or make a mistake in interpreting the results. On the contrary, a qualified operator accustomed to working in critical environments can carry out the control quickly, safely and accurately, minimizing downtime.
The role of controls from a preventive perspective
It should not be forgotten that NDTs are not only used to verify that “everything is in place”. They are mainly used to predict failures, monitor the evolution of a defect, plan targeted interventions. This is the concept of predictive maintenance, which is increasingly central in high-risk plants.
A good inspection plan can dramatically reduce downtime costs and increase the useful life of facilities. This is why it is important to build a tailor-made control strategy, which takes into account the history of the plant, the type of processing, the materials involved and the operating conditions.
