In the industrial sector, fuel storage is a critical element from both the point of view of safety and environmental protection. Among the most advanced techniques for monitoring the structural condition of tanks are non-destructive testing (NDT), in particular those based on acoustic emissions.
What are noise emissions?
Acoustic emissions are sound signals generated by phenomena inside materials, such as cracking, corrosion, leaks or other types of stress. These signals can be captured by special sensors and analyzed to identify any critical issues in the structures. This method stands out for its ability to detect problems in real time, even in areas that are difficult to reach with traditional techniques.
Why are they essential for fuel storage?
Fuel storage tanks are exposed to various stresses: variations in temperature, internal pressure, and the presence of corrosive agents. These conditions can cause structural degradation which, if not detected in time, can lead to fuel leaks or, in the most serious cases, fires or explosions.
The methods are different: they range from control by acoustic emission with instruments up to 40 channels for large storage tanks, to SDT methods, more practical and faster, performed on the storage tanks of fuel distributors for vehicles (in accordance with the Unichim 195 Manual).
Through acoustic emission control, it is possible to:
- Identify early signs of degradation.
- Reduce risks to the environment and the safety of personnel.
- Plan targeted maintenance interventions, optimizing time and costs.
The role of non-destructive testing in asset integrity
Asset integrity, i.e. the set of practices aimed at ensuring the reliability and safety of industrial infrastructures, finds an irreplaceable ally in non-destructive testing. These methods allow for in-depth checks without compromising the operation of the facilities. In addition, the use of advanced technologies such as acoustic emissions guarantees a level of detail and precision that can hardly be achieved with other techniques.
CR Inspection, your partner for non-destructive testing
CR Inspection, through its certified organization distributed throughout the Italian territory, is the right and reliable partner for the execution of non-destructive tests. We offer punctual execution, complete assistance and transparency in costs. Our team of experienced technicians is certified and ready to offer customized solutions to meet your specific needs. In addition, as a certifying body, we not only carry out the checks, but also certify the employees, using highly qualified technicians who are also teachers and examiners. This expertise not only guarantees compliance with the highest quality standards, but offers customers the security of relying on experienced professionals who are up-to-date on the methodologies and innovations in the sector. We can also draw up customized risk-based control plans (RBI – Risk Based Inspection methodology) in accordance with the most common regulatory references, such as API581.
