Magnetoscopy, also known as magnetic particle testing (MT), is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to detect surface and sub-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. This method takes advantage of the magnetic properties of materials to identify defects such as cracks, inclusions, porosity, and other discontinuities that could compromise the structural integrity of a component.
How magnetic oscopy works
The working principle of magnetoscopy is based on the application of a magnetic field to the component to be examined. When the magnetic field encounters a discontinuity, the magnetic flux lines are distorted, creating a stray field. By applying ferromagnetic particles (in dry powder or liquid suspension) to the surface of the component, they are attracted to the stray field and accumulate at the discontinuity, making it visible.
Phases of the magnetoscopy process
The process of magnetoscopy is divided into several phases:
• Surface preparation: The surface of the component must be clean and free of contaminants that could interfere with the magnetization process.
• Magnetization: the component is subjected to a magnetic field using different techniques, such as the application of electric current or the use of permanent magnets or electromagnets.
• Detector application: ferromagnetic particles are applied to the magnetized surface, either dry or in liquid suspension.
• Inspection: The operator examines the surface of the component for any indications of discontinuity, which appear as accumulations of ferromagnetic particles.
• Demagnetization (if necessary): In some cases, it is necessary to demagnetize the component to remove residual magnetism.
• Final cleaning: the component is cleaned to remove residual ferromagnetic particles.
Advantages of magnetic magnetoscopy
Magnetic tape recording offers several advantages over other NDT methods:
• It is a relatively simple and quick method.
• It can detect surface and sub-surface discontinuities.
• It is applicable to a wide range of ferromagnetic materials.
• It is a cost-effective and portable method.
Applications of Magnetic Scopy
Magnetic magnetoscopy is widely used in several industries, including:
• Aerospace: for the inspection of critical components such as engines and wing structures.
• Automotive: For inspecting engine components, suspensions, and transmission systems.
• Oil and gas: for the inspection of pipelines, reservoirs and drilling equipment.
• Power generation: for the inspection of turbines, generators and power plant components.
• Railways: inspection of axles, wheels and safety components.
