In the context of the safety and regulation of the transport of dangerous goods, TPED (Transportable Pressure Equipment Directive) certification plays a crucial role. This European Directive, identified with the number 2010/35/EU, establishes the standards for the certification and verification of transportable pressure equipment. It ensures that such equipment is safe and complies with international standards, thus protecting transporters, the environment, and the community. In this article, we will explore TPED certification in detail, its purpose, requirements, and the importance of this regulation.

What is TPED Certification?
TPED is a European Union directive that applies to transportable pressure equipment, such as cylinders, tanks, and gas containers. The main objective of the Directive is to ensure that this equipment is safe for transport by road, rail and inland waterways. TPED covers a wide range of equipment used for the transport of compressed, liquefied and dissolved gases, as well as other hazardous substances.
Purpose of the TPED Directive
The TPED Directive aims to:
- Ensure a high level of safety for transportable pressure equipment.
- Standardize regulations between EU Member States, facilitating cross-border trade.
- Reduce the risks associated with the transport of hazardous substances.
This directive ensures that all transportable pressure equipment meets the same essential safety requirements, regardless of the country in which it is used or manufactured.
π marking
One of the distinctive elements of TPED is the π (pi) marking. Transportable pressure equipment complying with the Directive must be marked with this symbol. The π marking indicates that the product has been assessed and certified as compliant with European regulations by a notified body.
Conformity assessment
To obtain TPED certification, equipment must go through a rigorous conformity assessment process. This process includes:
- Design: Checking the design of the equipment to ensure it meets safety standards.
- Production: Checks during production to ensure that the methods and materials used comply with the required standards.
- Final inspection: it is verified, in the presence of the Notified Body, that the product passes the required tests.
- Marking: the Notified Body authorizes the Manufacturer to place the product on the market.
Periodic inspections
Equipment should be regularly inspected to verify its integrity and safety over time.
Who issues the certification
Conformity assessment and periodic checks must be carried out by notified bodies, such as CR Inspection. These are nationally accredited bodies recognised by the European Commission. CR Inspection, as a notified body, is responsible for carrying out the inspections, tests and evaluations necessary to certify that the equipment meets the requirements of the TPED. CR Inspection is also able to issue certificates of conformity, ensuring that transportable pressure equipment remains safe throughout its life cycle.
Why choose CR Inspection?
CR Inspection, through its organization distributed throughout the Italian territory, is the right and reliable partner for the TPED Certification procedure. We offer punctual execution, complete assistance and transparency in costs. CR Inspection is responsible for certifying transportable pressure equipment pursuant to Directive 2010/35/EU and carrying out periodic checks on such equipment. With a decade of experience in the periodic testing of LPG transport tanks and transport of dangerous goods in general.
