Non-destructive testing (CnD) is a critical component in ensuring the safety and reliability of structures and materials used in various industries, from construction to aerospace. But what exactly are these checks and who has the competence to perform them?

The CnD include examinations, tests and surveys that are conducted without altering the material under examination. This means that there is no need to destroy or remove samples from the facility, allowing the quality and integrity of materials and components to be assessed safely and without risk to facility operations. Thanks to this feature, CnDs are particularly useful in situations where maintaining functionality is crucial, such as in the case of critical infrastructures or machinery components.

Who can carry out non-destructive testing?

The answer is that CnD can be performed by highly qualified and certified personnel, able to use specific techniques and tools. Typically, non-destructive testing technicians must have specific skills in various inspection methods, including:

  • Ultrasonic (UT): This method uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal defects in materials. It is particularly useful for evaluating thicknesses and identifying inclusions, cracks, or melt failures.
  • Radiography (RT): Uses ionizing radiation to obtain internal images of structures and materials. It is effective for highlighting internal or surface discontinuities and evaluating the quality of welds.
  • Magnetoscopy (MT): It is applied to ferromagnetic materials and allows the detection of surface or sub-surface defects through the magnetic flux dispersed by a discontinuity that causes the aggregation of magnetic powders at that point.
  • Liquid Penetrant (PT): This method is used to detect surface defects on non-porous materials. Through the application of a penetrating liquid, cracks and porosity can be highlighted.
  • Thermography (TT): Uses heat emission detection to identify thermal anomalies, often used for energy performance monitoring.

Skills and certifications

Technicians who perform CnD must be trained and certified according to internationally recognized standards, such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) according to the ISO9712 standard. The training includes theory, practice and field experience, thus ensuring that every check is carried out to a high standard.
